VAR Heaps the Pressure on Spurs

The increasing problems with VAR (not this blog) are becoming more apparent.

Spurs were denied a 2-0 lead by VAR against Leicester due to a marginal offside call. Within minutes of the decision Leicester scored 2 goals, winning the game 2-1.

Tottenham are currently sitting 7th with two losses this season and winless away from home in the league. Spurs are undeniably in a mini-crisis (You love to see it).

Admittedly Spurs can argue that VAR was to blame for that loss.

Son was within the unofficially calculated margin of error for offside which is perfectly explained in the link below, prompting the question: How big is our VAR problem?

Does VAR need to be mathematically perfect? I don’t think so. Part of live sport is discussion debatable decisions and feeling aggrieved or even lucky.

So I propose football learns from TMO in rugby. Technology supports the referee in a way that allows a large proportion of decisions to be correct without disrupting the flow of the game. Referees can only ask: “Any reason not to award this Try?” or “Try, Yes or No” after a Try is given.

Referees should be supported by VAR but equally have a limited amount of questions they can ask such as is there a clear and obvious reason not to award a goal.

Furthermore all referees should wear a microphone which would solve a lot of issues in football.

But what are your thoughts on VAR. Should we scrap, modify or leave it?

  1. VAR will never take on the same format or principle that rugby has adopted with the TMO, unfortunately.

When VAR was still being developed, the football associations never seeked out the advice of other sporting bodies for help in finding the best way of running the technology along side the game being played.

So long as it continues to hinder spurs, and dig their mini crisis deeper and deeper, I’ll be forever a great supporter of it remaining exactly how is…!

    Great post 👍
