Porto? Nope. Benfica? Try again. The other one? Not them either.
It is none other than FC Famalicão…
I hadn’t heard of them either. This is their first season in the Portuguese Primeria Liga in a quarter of a century after gaining promotion last season.
Undefeated this season they sit one point above Porto and Benfica who are hoping to restore natural order by knocking Famalicão from the top of the pack.
Porto have already beat Benfica away 2-0 this season suggesting they are the side mostly likely to topple Famalicão, and what is Porto’s next fixture?
27/10/19, 17:30 KO home to FC Famalicão
João Pedro Sousa the former assistant manager of Everton’s Marco Silva is the new manager of Famalicão and will be looking to make a big statement in this fixture.
Coming from behind to beat Lisbon 2-1 in their last away trip will give this side confidence that they can go to Porto and repeat the result, stating their claim this season that they’re not just the new kids on the block.
Only a few games into an arduous season but João Pedro Sousa’s side look exciting if nothing else. Let us hope he can sustain form better than Marco Silva and make some history in the Portuguese League this season.
Either way I suspect that we will hear more from João Pedro Sousa in the furture, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the Premier League sooner rather than later.
