The 2019 Rugby World Cup Bids Farewell to its Hosts

On Sunday we bid goodbye to the host nations of the 2019 Rugby World Cup when South Africa defeated Japan 26-3 in the Quarter Finals. Japan made history this World Cup, warming the hearts of all rugby fans across the world (except maybe the Scottish).

Two upset victories against Ireland and Scotland in addition to convincing victories against Russia and Samoa meant Japan became the first ever Tier 2 nation to top their pool, and the first Tier 2 nation to reach the knockout stages since Fiji in 2007.

The Japanese spirit could only carry them so far when South Africa utilised their power to defeat the speed of Japan on Sunday. Losing five of their own lineouts in addition to defending the maul poorly meant the Springboks left victorious. This game lacked the magic of Japan’s last game against Scotland but South Africa know how to win meaning Wales have a lot to do if they’re going to progress to the Final next Sunday.

This World Cup has still been a major success for Japan and indeed Rugby. Being a home nation doesn’t guarantee progression to the knockout stages… isn’t that right England?

Progressing from their upset victory against South Africa four years ago to finishing top of their pool this time out Japan will be looking towards the 2023 World Cup in France with the hope of making it one step further next time.

For this tournament, congratulations and commiserations to Japan for being the entertainers of the tournament.
