Arsène Wenger and VAR

Arsène Wenger was recently appointed the chief of global football development at Fifa and has recently voiced his opinion on the use of VAR in the Premier League.

Above everything else VAR being used consistently by all referees at all grounds has to be his highest priority to advance its use.

One key problem for consistency is both Anfield and Old Trafford lack a screen explaining decisions made by VAR to fans often leading to confusion.

Yesterday Sheffield United fans were heard chanting “It’s not football anymore” after Lundstram was ruled offside by VAR despite not being associated with the attacking play.

This is only one of many controversial incidents this season leading to many including myself resenting the use of VAR in football.

VAR should support the referee’s decision, not interfere with it. After all it is called a Video ASSISTANT Referee.

Mike Riley opposes Wenger’s belief that the Premier League should introduce pitch side monitors as it would cause additional time delays. Personally I didn’t see this to be a problem in the previous World Cup where VAR was used, nor in the Champions league.

As much as we enjoy refereeing from our homes, it is true Premier League referees “have the experience and are confident” enough to make decisions on the pitch.

Consistency and authority from the referees need to be prioritised by Wenger if VAR is to be progress and become a supportive tool for football.

Because VAR in its current state does not work.
