Petr Cech wins Man Of The Match after Two Penalty Saves on Debut

You’re right Cech did retire from Arsenal last season, and if you followed him more closely he is the current Technical and Performance advisor of Chelsea. When on Earth did he last win a Man of the Match then let alone save two penalties?

At his newest team the Guildford Phoenix, a semi-professional Ice Hockey side! Growing up watching the sport, Cech is third choice goalkeeper for Phoenix due to his commitments with Chelsea. Not a bad debut for the Czech who is looking to play more often over the season following his debut.

This story got me thinking, what other sportsmen have dominated one sport and thrown themselves into another?

Sonny Bill Williams is the first jumping to mind. The controversial rugby legend took his sporting abilities from the rugby field to the boxing ring a while back. Playing for the best sports side in sporting history wasn’t challenging enough so Williams took to boxing where he was undefeated winning both New Zealand and World heavyweight titles. Williams was later stripped of these titles after failing to respond to challengers.

Once the record holder for most test wickets, Sir Ian Botham is known by the Irons and Glovers as more than a cricketer. Both Scunthorpe and Yeovil remember the solid centre half who managed two goals during his short playing career. Botham only played for a short time before concentrating to cricket which in all honesty was probably the right career move.

What other great sportsmen could compete in two different sports? Could Hector Bellerin have been a sprinter? Maybe Tiger Woods’ power and hand-eye coordination could be applied to cricket? Maybe Ashley Young could’ve been a British Diver? Who knows?

If you could pick one sportsman to compete in another sport who would it be and why? Please leave your comments below and leave a like if you’ve enjoyed this post!
