Gareth Bale – “The Most Decorated British footballer of his generation”

According to BT sports Bale is the most decorated British footballer of his generation.

According to Wales he’s the most decorated WELSH footballer of his generation.

I can tell you he’s neither.

There is a point to be made about British media labelling individuals as British when it’s positive news, or as Welsh/Scottish/NI for negative stories; Andy Murray and Ched Evans being prime examples of that contrast.

However British or Welsh he isn’t the most decorated player of his generation.

Another left footed Welsh wizard holds that mantle… a certain Ryan Giggs. With 34 major trophies during his playing career there are few players with more trophies, let alone Brits.

Giggs currently has 10 years of a playing on Bale; however I can’t see Bale catching Giggs total. But consider this. Giggs was a one man club.

No I’m not calling him loyal. I think Paddy Power covered that one.

I mean he only ever played in Britain, unlike Bale who has travelled to Madrid for his success.

Additionally Bale took Wales to an international tournament, and was a key player in the success of Euro 2016.

He’s also surpassed the stats of travelling players such as Paul Lambert, Steve McManaman, John Charles……

So I suggest BT revise their statement to be:

“Bale is the most successful travelling British player ever”.

OR

“The most successful British player in UCL history”

I think he’ll be happy with that, don’t you?
